It's pretty hard to believe that seven years ago Ubisoft Montreal dropped a little series onto the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 named Assassin's Creed. At the time it was anticipated as little more than a historical slasher with some spy and rogue like elements. We didn't know that we were witnessing the birth of one of the biggest gaming franchises of our generation. Now we are here almost a decade later and the Assassins Creed line is about to see it's seventh and eight video game releases, in Unity and Rogue, as well as an additional Hollywood Blockbuster starring A-Lister Michael Fassbender. With so much coming out in the next year or two it is more than worth it to take a peak at just what we are getting. Assassin's Creed Unity is set to release on November 11th as an exclusive title for the next gen console world (Xbox One, PS4, PC). Let's dive into Assassin's Creed Unity and unveil a few of the mysterious behind this mega title.

An Unrivaled Experience in Epic Scale

A brief glance at any trailer for the new game will reveal that the team of developers behind Unity are aiming for an expansive gameplay experience. Much like great sandbox games of old, like Skyrim and Fall Out, Unity has a gigantic playable world that can be, at times, overwhelming. The setting for Unity is in Paris, France, and the ancient city has been re-created in a near 1 to 1 scale. This means that as you walk through the streets as your fully customizable assassin, you will be experiencing the city in a way consistent to reality as it was, back then. Many games that offer these sort of expansive environments typically tend to sacrifice on the small details. In the GTA series you will often see buildings repeated, un-openable doors, and recycled textures. This is not the case for Unity. The world has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail to exist as a breathing and livable space. The new Nexus Anvil engine has allowed Ubisoft to put in crowds of up to 5,000 people in the streets of Paris to populate your new playground. This looks and feels good because it looks and feels real. Experience up to seven different districts of the city, each one with its own architecture, residents, and overall vibe. Exploration has never been so fun.

A Driving Campaign

When you start playing Unity you will be placed into the shoes of master assassin Arno Dorian. Dorian is a Frenchman from Versailles who has a lineage in the assassins business. His quest for vengeance over past familial wrongs drives the story forward and gives players something to latch on to as they push through the campaign. Your story will start in Paris on the night before the French Revolution. This is obviously a much covered piece of history but we can promise you that it has never been looked at in this way before. You will also see historical characters such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Marquis de Sade and Maximilien de Robespierre though they are not playable for you.

Beefed up Elements

The calling card for the Assassin's Creed series has always been its fluid parkour style gameplay. Thankfully, despite its popularity, the system has been updated accordingly. The team at Ubisoft has established two new modes of parkour (Up and Down) that alleviate a ton of the frustration that players experienced when they struggled to move around in certain directions. As well as the revitalized parkour system we have the addition of four player cooperative multiplayer. While it's taken almost eight years to see Assassin's Creed get co-op into the game, we're just happy that it's here. While playing simply go to the nearest tavern to see if your friends are online. If they are online you will see them as a shaded out 'ghost'. Go up to their avatar and with the click of a button you can request to join their game.

Complete Customization

For the first time ever players have the option to completely customize their assassin. Ubisoft has added a skill tree to the game that allows you to navigate the playstyle that best suits you. You can change out your clothing, weapons, and logos to make yourself truly a one of a kind killing machine. Overall Assassin's Creed Unity is set to turn a few heads.
