Basement Crawl is a maze-based action video game which was published and developed by Bloober Team and released on the PlayStation 4 under the downloadable (DLC) format.

Basement Crawl is a 2.5D stylized board game and largely resembles Bomberman, the game supports both 4 player co-op mode known as the hot seat, and 8 player online play. The game boosts the use of dynamic cameras and this is depicted on the characters, overall mechanics and finally the game modes within the game. When the game immediately starts you are presented with a screen, this screen shows four available characters where one is selected. Each character has his or her own skill set, which are similar to other characters creating a sort of balance against each other when compared. You can select an evil teddy bear, scary clown, amputee crash test dummy in a wheelchair or a killer woman.

Basement Crawl is a bit of an odd duck, although these characters are presented to us, no history and a vague storyline that reads "A grandmother sternly tells her granddaughter of the dangers that lurk outside their home". There is no mention as to what these dangers are or even why they are lurking in the first place. The characters are presented to us in the same fashion, who are they and where did they come from, what their role was, is, within the game. The developers responded to this by saying they will be making a new and revamped version which will include the history and story, although to present date this has not been done. They also stated various other upgrades and promised a downloadable upgrade which fixes these problems within the game, again nothing has been seen or mentioned since.

So already you have gamers not impressed with the overall layout of the game, that coupled with the fact that is seems more like a rip-off of Bomberman, lack of direction with unscripted character and storylines is the reason why this title failed to make any sort of mark within the gaming world. It also feels like the game was rushed, did they run out of money, was it down to laziness, it is hard to say suffice to say the game suffered much as a result of all the problems.

The core premise of the game is the players are placed on what can only be described as a square grid based 2.5D platform environment, the object is to lay traps, lay down bombs in positions that destroy the opposing players. These bombs explode is a multitude of directs, up, down, left and right so the full spectrum. The player can hide behind blocks which cannot be destroyed, they also have the option for power-ups. As more and more power-ups are collected the bombs which have been strategically placed by the player emit a stronger explosion in different directions. In effect they reach further across the square board, the player might feel he is just out of reach, then zap the player is fried.

Although Basement Crawl has some fun elements, like trapping people in corners and watching them explode, the game really lacks the basic fundamental assets which almost all games released come with. There are no real options to add scope to the gameplay and experience, to stop it getting monotonous, it only gets worse when the player then finds out he has no single player mode, and there is no option to date to be able to play against the computer. No practice modes, nothing. The only offering you are presented with is two modes of play namely, Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch.

The online mode of play also becomes very restrictive, you cannot customize the amount of players on screen at any given moment, so if you wanted only a couple of players on screen as the board is small, you are forced in effect to have 8 players. The arenas offer very little differences between the locations, nothing of real imagination.

When I talk about imagination, why not have different obtainable weapons, almost like you do in Worms the Video Game, spice it up a little, rather than the old format where you can only place bombs and kick a trap across the floor, this gets predicable at times and after a while just becomes bog standard entertainment. There are elements of fun within this but they are overshadowed by a plethora of problems which should have been ironed out before the initial release. Even the online pause button counted the timer down once pressed, making it redundant, it is a pause button it is supposed to pause matches.

Overall, Basement Crawl on the PlayStation 4 is a bit of a disappointment, a large disappointment if you like, what should have been a decent title has turned out to contain lots of problems to deal with, most of which attacked the very foundations we feel Bloober Team was trying to resurrect. A shame really.
