Battlefield 3 Premium Edition continues with Battlefield 3, a first-person shooter with destructible environments, large-scale maps, controllable vehicles, and online support for up to 64 simultaneous players. The single-player campaign, which the publisher estimates to be 12 hours in length, features multiple playable characters in a structure similar to Activision's Call of Duty franchise. In a storyline set in 2014, you'll play as a Russian agent sent to stop a terrorist attack in Paris, a Marine corporal in the Tehran desert, and as others in missions set in Sarajevo, New York, Wake Island, Oman, and Sulaymaniyah.

Battlefield 3 Premium Edition for the PC is a re-release of the 2011 hit Battlefield 3, available through retail stores and exclusively on EA's Origin download service. It contains the original game, the Multiplayer Starter Pack consisting of unique skins and weapons, and all five expansion packs: Return to Karkand, Close Quarters, Armored Kill, Aftermath and End Game. In total, these expansion packs add 20 new maps, 10 new vehicles and 4 new gameplay modes: Conquest Assault, Conquest Domination, Tank Superiority and Capture the Flag. All of these expansion packs were released for 15 dollars apiece originally, but Battlefield 3 PE released at 70 dollars, a bargain for this hugely expanded version of Battlefield 3.

In addition to the new maps, modes, vehicles and weapons, Premium players also gain access to exclusive skins for their soldiers, camo for their guns, a few exclusive weapons for each of the four classes and content on the Battlefield Battlelog website, amounting to what is essentially a season pass for Battlefield 3. There are no restrictions for Premium players playing against standard edition players on the original maps, and these players are marked with a special emblem that describes them as elite players. Some of these exclusive items are available as soon as the Premium content is loaded, but some of it is unlockable as players rank up in order to parcel out the new content and prolong the experience.

All five expansion packs together make for a tremendous expansion to the base game and are centered on multiplayer, concentrating on a different aspect of the gameplay. Return to Karkand is similar to the base game but concentrates on remaking maps from DICE's 2005 hit, Battlefield 2, with the Karkand map being the centerpiece. Close Quarters contains mostly maps with little or no vehicles, and lower player counts for a fast paced, infantry-only experience in maps with lots of verticality. Armored Kill contains huge maps to accommodate larger numbers of vehicles. Aftermath is set in a post-earthquake Iran and features a number of asymmetrical urban maps to accommodate squad skirmishes. The final expansion, End Game, features the largest Battlefield map ever, adding a number of small, light vehicles to facilitate the Capture the Flag game mode.

Each expansion takes opportunities to show off the incredible graphics possible with DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, which is capable of dynamic destruction, atmospheric effects such as lens flare and volumetric lighting with dozens of players on the screen at any given time. In Hardcore mode, for example, the heads up display is turned off, meaning no map, no ammo counter and no on screen icons marking objectives or enemy players, so careful players will be able to appreciate how the graphic and sound design works to let them identify objectives and adversaries. Unfortunately, the single player mode is the same as in the single player mode, despite the addition to adversarial and co-op multiplayer. However, the additions amount to hundreds of hours of additional gameplay. On the whole, there's so much content added to the base game that it actually seems like a full sequel.
