Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is, to our mind, one of the true 'must buys’ on the PlayStation 4. Developed by the men and women at Gearbox Software, The Handsome Collection brings gamers back to a weird and wonderful world that defined the last generation for many gamers. For the PlayStation 4 this is a chance to get your hands on a high definition remastering of what we consider to be the greatest FPS/RPG that we have ever played: Borderlands 2 as well as a copy of the Pre-Sequel. Compilation entries can range from cash grabs to true blue reboots with varying effect. Thankfully this compilation is optimized in a way so as to give respect to the original releases while also adding value to them. If you are on the fence about this collection, keep on reading.

The original Borderlands, the one that rose to cult critical acclaim, was developed by 2K Games back in 2009. The title initially came out of nowhere and it quickly inspired gamers everywhere. Flawlessly blending RPG and FPS elements, Borderlands was able to capture out imagination as well as our attention. It was no surprise when the title went viral and sequels were ordered up. Now, a whole six years later, we have enjoyed two more additions to the universe of the game: Borderlands 2 (our favorite) and The Pre-Sequel. The Pre-Sequel was released to more lukewarm reception but it is still a solid title and one that willingly expands the universe that 2K Games began developing. Opting not to simply optimize visuals and re-release as a cash grab, Gearbox treated the franchise with the respect that it deserved and did some nice things with it.

Borderlands 2, as we talked about, is probably one of the best games that we have and will ever play. As a simple FPS game it works well, combine in the RPG elements (which now can be seen in games like Destiny) and you have something really special. Blending in the lore of the world with non stop action while also imploring strategic decision making seems almost impossible, but it was accomplished. Set on Pandora you explore the dangerous world hoping to find treasure and riches abound without finding your own death. The game is so fluid, so beautiful, and so immersive that it instantly had us hooked.

We talked about disliking The Pre-Sequel, but we aren’t in the majority with that opinion. The Pre-Sequel came at a time when so many other great titles were dropping that we probably didn’t give it its fair shake. Still, there are some valid criticisms of the game. The Pre-Sequel was developed by the workers over at 2K Australia rather than any company state side. We could tell that the Pre-Sequel lacked the shine and glamor of the prior entries but still it was better than most of the other genre garbage that gets released nowadays.

So, seeing how insanely good the franchise has been to gamers it was no surprise that a company would try to bring it to the current generation. Gearbox put together Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel into a convenient 2 for 1 package that offered twice the gameplay for the price of a single PS4 game. We aren’t sure why they opted not to include the original Borderlands, and in doing so make this a trilogy release, but that decision was made. We would have rather they dropped the Pre-Sequel in favor of the original title. Still, we can’t change that now. In any event, The Handsome Collection promised to bring Borderlands to the next generation in full 1080p HD glory with 60FPS rate of visuals. This huge graphical upgrade, combined with the great price, was reason enough to purchase the game - even if you had played the two titles before on an older console. If this is your first step into the world of Borderlands then this is a great purchase for you as well.

So not only are you getting two classic titles for the price of one, you are also getting all of the downloadable content that has been released to this date. Included on the discs are the hugely popular additions of the Claptastic Voyage and the Ultimate Vault Hunter Pack. Without even taking your time you are probably looking at around 100 total hours of content. If you are a slow going completionist then you could easily extend those 100 hours another 20 or 30.

At the very least you are getting a set of games that promise to keep you very focused for a long time. There is very little downside to the actual package but we will delve into some of the problems anyway. Like we said, many compilation packages tend to gloss over bigger issues in order to get the most bang for their buck. While Borderlands 2 rarely had any issues in its original incarnation, there are a few that pop up here - same with the Pre-Sequel.

For Borderlands 2 one of the biggest issues that we ran into was that of dropped frame rates when there was no reason for it. Don’t get us wrong, our PS4 is really pushing its hardware in order to render this beautiful game but we would experience stuttered frame rates when things were going slow and the hardware wasn’t pushing itself. For such an immersive and beautiful game on the PS3, it really is a shame that we lose some of the remastered glory due to a technical issue. For the Pre-Sequel we had a problem that was a little bit wider spread and more notable. When things got hectic in the Pre-Sequel, in The Handsome Collection, we would notice visible tearing in our screen. Quick movement would cause the screen to distort in unpleasant ways that forced us to lose visuals. It’s not a deal breaker but it was definitely distracting.

So as you can see, The Handsome Collection is definitely a viable title for new fans of the series. The issues we found will probably be patched and fixed up, and the 130 hours of gameplay should keep you otherwise occupied.
