Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is a 2015 tactical Japanese role-playing video game which was released for the PlayStation 4 on October 6, 2015, this is the latest release in the Disgaea series and was released and published by NIS America.

The role within Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is geared around the idea of "revenge". The evil demon emperor Void Dark is out for blood and is responsible for the devastation of numerous Netherworlds regions after obtaining leadership after coming to power. He managed to achieve this feat with the help of an army of over 10 billion lost soldiers which are referred to as The Lost. The actual core element to the game revolves around traveling across different Netherworlds in an attempt to bring the Overlords and heirs of each different Netherworld to join forces and form an allegiance in the bid to fight again Void Dark and his band of followers. This originally is set in motion by the character known as "Killia", Killia is a young demon and he has vowed to stand again the Evil Void Dark and his band of lost soldiers, after he happened to save the "Princess Overload Seraphina" who later allows him to accompany her, Killia accepted, begrudgingly I might add and off they go.

The biggest problem with these later releases in this particular franchise is the ever expanding and evolving of new game modes, without giving more serious thought to other game modes that has been adopted in the previous titles. Some with quite substantial success, which made many gamers question why these types of game modes were not carried forward. Instead a completely new game mode has be adopted, while this can be seen as commendable, sometimes if it is not broke, then why do they feel the need to completely change it, or worst still, completely remove it. Would it not be better to adopt or expand, evolve the different types of game modes from past titles as well as the new, I don’t see why not.

What is good news is the graphical presentation on the PlayStation 4 has been seriously upgraded, and not before time I might add, In addition to the overhaul of the presentation, the number of characters displayable on-screen has now increased to over 100, compared to a measly 10 characters which was adopted in the older console systems, so NIS America has made good use of the next gen systems. These characters who have the option to perform special moves by combining attacks by effectively pairing up with each other, making it a super combo attack of sorts, these are referred to as Fusion Skills.

Some of the new playable character classes include dark knights which yield melee weapons, maids also make an appearance and they come with guns, warriors who unleash their Axe, Sword, or Spear, there are also a plethora of other characters each having uniqueness. NIS America have also recently released 5 new characters which are now available, these characters are called, Imp, Grizzly, Rabbit, Twin Dragon, and finally Horsemen, these also have unique skill sets and powers, each with ratings to show the effectiveness of any given character within the game.

I briefly touched on the actual gameplay visuals, this should be commended as often with titles with fast gameplay you may often see lag with the characters, more so when more are on screen. This is not the case with Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance on the PlayStation 4. The graphics are the best I have seen and we have viewed a lot of titles with a similar style and theme, and that coupled with the array of colours, levels, really adds to the overall polish of the game. It is nice to see game developers take on feedback from avid fans and take a strong approach to fix what was lacking in previous titles associated with Japanese fighting RPG’s. Namely the overall graphical presentation, and the increase number of characters appearing on the screen.

The core gameplay remains the same as in previous versions of Disgaea titles. Like Disgaea 4 for example, HD sprites are used to represent the characters on-screen.

A major new gameplay addition has also been added and this is known as Revenge Mode. Here, the characters take damage if their allies happen to fall in battle, a new Revenge Gauge is shown beside a character's portrait in battle and will slowly fill up. Once the gauge it all filled up, characters enter this Revenge Mode and obtain new abilities and stat boosts upon victory. Enemies can also enter Revenge Mode at any time, and will award various shards when they have been defeated in battle, this in turn improves the character's overall stats and abilities. The stats now have an infinite potential as they ever increase with time and constant successes within battle.

Characters can also equip more than one weapon now, and they can use the weapon skills of the extra weapon they have equipped. Disgaea 5 will use the Weapon Mastery system found in the original Disgaea D2.

Overall, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance on the PlayStation 4 is a solid title which has immensely improved for the most part, especially in all areas pertaining to what matters most, the gameplay. NIS America seem to have for the better part really pulled out all the stops and made the most of this next gen console.
