Medal of Honor Warfighter is the latest installment in the 2010 reboot of the classic franchise. Warfighter, along with Battlefield, are EAs attempt at capturing the coveted military first person shooter market share from Activisions Call of Duty franchise. Does Medal of Honor Warfighter live up to the expectations of its classic predecessors or does it trip on an IED?
The games single player campaign is decent enough to keep you interested, which is until a couple hours in when the realization sets in that there is no story. I found myself killing enemies and asking why I am fighting these people. This leaves you with a sense of mindlessly killing Arabs in a generic Middle Eastern country with no clear purpose. I was so disinterested that I almost didnt even finish the campaign at all. And if youre not paying attention youll miss the queue that shows youre in a flashback and become completely lost in the plot.
The other characters that fight with you also blend in together and are just as generic. Other modern military first person shooters give your buddies defining characteristics and personalities. With Warfighter you dont know whom youre fighting with and feel no emotional attachment when one of them dies.
This is the main reason that you bought the game anyway so the story might not turn you off. The multiplayer is significantly better than the campaign, although it still comes up a bit short. You will find everything there is in all other first person shooters, but thats it. Theres death match, team death match, capture the flag, leveling up, upgrading your weapons, plus a few others, but nothing we havent seen before.
The maps themselves are generics and there isnt much originality between them. Oftentimes I became lost and didnt know where to go. The spawn points are horrible and youll find yourself spawning right behind enemies or vice versa.
On consoles Warfighter is sub par in its presentation. There are way too many games that just look better in general. This might have been decent enough for a launch title on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but it just doesnt look up to code. Environments are repetitive and are mostly composed of brown and greys that give no multiplayer map much originality.
The textures are bad. Theres just not that much detail in anything. On the PC it is noticeably better, but even that is sub par compared to other games in the genre. Even EAs own Battlefield 3 looks miles ahead in this department.
After everything Medal of Honor Warfighter is an mediocre game, but it is eclipsed by the very games that its trying to compete against. Everything about this game just comes up average. Maybe if the market wasnt so flooded with this type of first person shooter it would stand out. Unfortunately weve seen far better representations of this game to let it slip away. Its not a bad game, its just overshadowed.
