Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for the 3DS is similar to the version for the Nintendo Wii. While similar to the Wii version, the 3DS version is also unique in it's own ways. Some of the differences include the way the game is played and also more Olympic events have been added. This game follows Sonic and pals in London at the 2012 Winter Olympic Games. They're able to perform winter sports like skiing but also gives players the chance to compete at other sports like BMX, track, fencing, trap shooting, soccer, football and even more sports are available. Players may also choose from up to four different characters from different character classes like Heroes and Wild Ones.
The main way the gameplay differs from the previous version is that it has been toned to be playable on a portable device such as the 3DS more easily. The way that this is accomplished is through the use of the stylus in combination with the 3DS screen. Many of the games that the player will encounter are mini-games. Sound effects and background music have been added to the mini-games and stages where appropriate and help to add a party sense of feel to the game. When playing, the person will be able to use their stylus to hit the opposing ball back into their opponent's court or they player might also be prompted to press a button at the right time.
There are many types of mini-games that will have the player using a combination of their stylus, utilizing the 3DS microphone and touching buttons simultaneously. The game uses a variety of control methods depending on the player's actions. For example, the player may either end up using the stylus to control the action on screen or may even end up using the built-in 3DS gryometer controls to tilt the unit if playing multiplayer matches.
The points that the player receives after winning a match will be tallied and can be automatically updated to the online community if the player wishes to do so. By posting results online, other players may see if they can beat the player's statistics. Besides posting the player's score, they may also earn tickets to trade them in for collectible badges later. There are up to 200 collectible badges that the player may collect and apply them towards their ID tag to earn ranks within the online communities.
One of the most important features added into the game is the addition of the Story Mode. This is a new gameplay feature that was not included in the original London 2012 Winter Olympic Games. The Story Mode gives people the chance to learn about what the characters were up to before coming to London and why they're there now. In the beginning of the game, both Egg Man and Bowser appear and form a plan to wreak havoc on London. It is up to Sonic, Mario and friends to compete through events to save the place.
