Summary:

Gold's Gym Cardio Workout is physical exercise software that makes use of the Wii's motion-sensitive controllers and is compatible with the Wii Balance Board peripheral. Players may partake in a variety of simulated activities designed to get the heart pumping and muscles toned, including sit-ups, skipping rope, jogging through the park, and hitting the heavy bag. The game incorporates training techniques from Gold's Gym International, through a virtual personal trainer that keeps track of each user's schedule, workout history, calories burned, weight change, and other statistics.

Some would say that buying a DVD would be just as effective as this Wii version, but this is actually more effective and more interactive. The workout is focused on "shape boxing". similar to the other boxing games on Wii. This would include the movements and the rhythm involved in boxing like punching, moving around and other sequences with a background music that would most complement it - like Eye of the Tiger a la Rambo.

There is an introductory lesson where basic and major moves like weaving and dodging is learned. This is only practice but the lessons already give a functional workout, especially for the couch potato. The sweat will literally increase the body temperature for about 15 minutes. If there is still a need to learn more, no problem, just go through the whole routine again until it gets familiar.

There are some precision moves like the upper cuts which need a lot of practice. The two Wii Remotes can take the place of the Nanchuck and gives better balance to the hands. There are no cables which could get in the way. The controls are responsive, but as this is a workout, just make sure to have extra batteries on hand.

Compared to the rhythm boxing, there are more moves involved in the My Fitness Coach: Cardio Workout, also the punches may take time to master for they involve speed and skill. It may be shadow boxing but it is in fact a very good workout alternative.

There is not much footwork involved but I saw that as a plus rather than a sign that this workout is not up to par with the others. I had always criticized that other workouts involved cameras and if I got out of range the interaction or the moves would not be quite the same. With this one, the lack of footwork gave me more balance which allowed me to work out the upper torso better.

Obviously this will never replace the Wii-fit and the Ea Sports Active for those both involve full body workouts. But this one definitely gives a fitness regimen that is very effective. This, I found, was a welcome addition to the others I have in the library. Although I would be the first to say that I don’t work out as much.

I do recommend this for this is not only informative and educational; it is also a great source for an upper body workout. Yes, there may be some criticisms but they do not affect the program in its entirety.
