'Guilty Gear XRD Sign' was developed by Arc System works Team Red and released on the PlayStation 4 in December of 2014. Guilty Gear is one of the more renown fighting series in the world of video games. with titles ranging all the way back to 1998. 'Sign' is just one of the latest iteration of the series and it offers things that the other games can't quite match. If you are unsure about taking your fighting games to the PS4 then keep reading, we might just change your mind.

So what's this all about?

If you are looking for a strong story in a fighting game then you are fishing in a shallow puddle. Guilty Gear has never been about blowing the lid off of a good story and it certainly isn't changing its way of thinking now. The game IS set in 2187, just one year after the events in 'Guilty Gear 2: Overture'. There are a host of new characters that step in front of you on your way to domination but that is all you need to be worried about. Snaps of dialogue float through the screen, on occasion, but your mind can rest pretty easy. This game is about laying some serious damage on your opponent all while looking as good as possible. There are the occasional animated cut scenes to watch but for the most part the story sticks to voice overs, still images, and a few shaky camera sequences. The game rightfully understands that you want to be fighting, not listening, and so it will keep you in the fight. If you do want to pay a lot of attention the story then keep your laptop handy. There are terms and references to things that most casual fans won't understand.

The BEST looking fighting game on the Playstation 4.

You need do little more than glance at the screen to understand that 'Guilty Gear XRD SIGN' is the best looking fighting game in the history of the genre. 'Sign' was developed by the Unreal Engine 3 and it truly pushes the PS4 to its limits. The game looks like a live action anime with its cel shaded graphics and classically stylized characters. The character models of the various fighters are all in full 3D and they fight on a 2D plane. The nature of the fighting makes the characters pop off of the screen and you begin to see that there is some depth to the world that isn't always hinted at. It's a great look on a great game. Stringing together combos and finding your way to your special move has rarely been so satisfying.

Much like 'Naruto', another famous anime inspired fighting series, 'SIGN' has implemented animated cut ins for all of your special moves. If you are burning through the campaign mode these constant cut ins may slow down the pace of the game, but they really do add a ton to the impact. All of this is to say that 'Sign' is a gorgeous game. At no point during your battles will you forget how smooth and crisp everything looks. The colors are vibrant, the characters richly detailed, and the hits look as punishing as possible.

A rock and roll sound system.

All of this hectic action going on your screen needs to be backed by a great soundtrack for the experience to be fully realized. How lame would these fights be if the sound was subpar? This Guilty Gear title doesn't let you ponder the question for too long. The audio is constantly driving and it keeps your adrenaline going. Hits and various combos sound vicious and the music even reacts to what is happening on the screen. The pace quickens when you go for a big hit and everything changes for the super special techniques you will routinely be unleashing. The voice acting is done well and it is appropriately cheesy. Grunts and exclamations add to the reality of the fight going on before you. Keeping it short, the sound works well in this game.

So how does it all handle?

If you are at all familiar with the series then you should find yourself right at home. For newcomers to Guilty Gear, GGxrd offers a smooth system that relies on your ability to string together counters and combos to find your way to the win. One of the newest additions to the fight is something called the Yellow Roman Cancel. This is a new move that you can perform when you miss on an attack. Basically as long as the attack occurred within 25 meters, you can hit the button and cancel it. Many hardcore fighting fans are adamant that the change will be negative to the series while other players are absolutely ecstatic by the way that it adds a new layer of strategy to the situation. I would say that as long as you are not a professional gamer, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

So what's there to do?

The bones and brains of the Guilty Gear series has to be considered the multiplayer mode. While obviously there is a campaign that you can fight through, it will only last you about three or four hours. The odds are good that you will spend way more time fighting your buddies. Which is fortunate, because multiplayer through the PlayStation Network is as smooth as ever. Outside of multiplayer and campaign you can also go through and hit the training area to practice your moves. You can also play in the mission mode where you will be taught new combinations and styles of fighting without feeling like you are in a tutorial.

A few last thoughts.

For the world of gaming there is no better looking fighting title than 'Guilty Gear XRD Sign'. For that reason alone you deserve to add it to your PlayStation 4 library. Outside of the beauty of the game, it handles well and will keep you fighting for quite awhile to come.
