Infamous First Light is an action game for the PlayStation 4 that was developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony. The game is available for download world wide as it was released in August of 2014. This is a piece of downloadable content meant to be added on to Infamous: Second Son. The game made its premier at E3 before going on into release. Featuring a host of dynamic combat sections, excellent graphics, and an intriguer story, 'First Light' definitely deserves a glance from those looking to fill out their hard drive with great playable content. Before getting your credit card out read on to see if this is the right game for you.

First let's talk about Second Son.

In order to understand the events of 'First Light' you will need to spend some time with the actual game that it is patched on to. Infamous: Second Son is an open world adventure game that features Delsin Rowe, a man with some pretty incredible powers. The setting of the game is in a futuristic re-imagining of Seattle in an almost dystopian setting. Rowe is one of the remaining 'Conduits' from the second 'Infamous' game and he is seemingly alone as he is being hunted down by the D.U.P--a branch of a totalitarian government that is dedicated to eradicating the world of those gifted with powers. And that is pretty much the game, in a nutshell. Players are forced to push through a world of powers and danger all while trying to overthrow a government that is trying to eradicate innocent people. The story is complicated and hard to capture as there have now been multiple entries into the series. In any event, this is the backbone of 'First Light' and it is where we meet Abigail.

So what is it about?

In an industry with a profound lack of interesting female leads, it is great to see another game organically come up to address the issue. The game stars Abigail 'Fetch' Walker, who many know from Infamous Second Son. She was one of the more interesting side characters in that game so we aren't surprised to see that she has gone on to take over the lime light.

The game starts up with Abigail locked up in prison by the D.U.P. Here she is ordered to show off her powers in front of an audience. It is through this demonstration that we learn how powerful she truly is, we also get a chance to look into her past. We see that Abigail is an emotionally fragile young girl with a violent past. Her parents tried to hide her abilities but were forced to come clean when she accidentally injured a classmate. Abigail and her older brother, Brent, ran away. They then worked for gangs and resorted to drug use as a coping mechanism. What follows is an intricate story of the emotionally abused, the powerful and the scared, and a relationship that can both give and take everything away. Players will come to care deeply for Abigail before it is all over and the final events of the game will set the table for what occurs in 'Second Son'.

How does it play?

If you have gotten your fill of Delsin Rowe and his adventures then you should already be pretty familiar with the controls of the game. In any event, 'First Light' mirrors the same controls. Fighting is fluid and initiating your different powers is entertaining and easy. There are a few different game modes within the actual story that allow you to improve your character. In neon races you will be able to use Abigail to track down neon gas. These spheres are called 'lumens' by the Conduits and they are basically the skill points that you spend to increase your powers. You can also fight via horde mode in the arena to earn more skill points to power up Abigail as you give her new powers and different abilities.

You will spend most of the 3-6 hours of the campaign venturing around to accomplish the mini missions that help push the story along. As we highlighted above, there are diversions for you to partake in so that the experience can be drawn out. The mini games and arena battles are great time killers and they are quite addictive. There is a trophy system involved and we know how crazy gamers go over getting those things. So figure to spend at least two or three hours working through it.

How does it look?

The 'Infamous' series has always looked pretty good and now that the games have come to the PlayStation 4 there is no excuse not to make it even better. This gritty future recreation of Seattle is interesting to look at despite the fact that it can get repetitive. Everything seems dark and gritty, which is a sign of the industry more than a conscious decision by the devs, and sometimes this can cause players to get a little bit turned around. Still, the character models are sharp and emotive and the bad guys are all beautifully designed. Fighting the various baddies in the horde mode is fantastic due to how different each of them looks and the way that they move and are animated. One of the most interesting new bad guys, exclusive to 'First Light', are the demons. They have their own skills and abilities that will push you to your limit.

A few thoughts in closing.

'Infamous: First Light' on the Playstation 4 is a remarkable little game that truly expands the world that the rest of the franchise has laid out. We particularly enjoyed learning so much more about such a fascinating character. Seeing the backstory that she lived through was fantastic and it really made the rest of the game seem more alive. The fighting is intuitive, her powers are interesting, and the bad guys are completely without remorse. It is easy to fall into the story and it feels good to know that there is more to come.
