In LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures on the Wii, players will see the most iconic archaeologist whip through all the classic moments with the help of a host of supporting characters including Marion Ravenwood and Short Round. Players can also mix and match the body parts of more than 60 playable characters to create new heroes just as they could in the best-selling LEGO Star Wars games. The game includes non-stop action from the original cinematic adventures that enthralled audiences everywhere (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). With a unique tongue-in-cheek take on the original adventures, LEGO Indiana Jones follows Dr. Jones escapades through the jungles of South America to the mountaintops of India.
The formula that made the LEGO games successful is kept here in every way. There is a lot of adventure and there are a lot of puzzles to solve, keys to collect, several areas to unlock and getting hold of as many Studs as possible.
The three original films are the basis for this game. The sequel only focused on the fourth movie but also included some brief interaction with the first three. That was a disappointment and affected the gameplay, this one is so much better. In fact, it is so good that the whole reason why the second failed was because it is good.
Here the adventures seen in the first three films are faithfully adhered to. This improved the gameplay a lot, made it more challenging, gave more chances to have more of the unexpected and definitely made it more fun.
This Wii version allows the player to use the motion controls for many of the actions although one could always opt against them. Indy’s whip could be swung simply by whipping the Wii Remote, the attack is made by shaking it, and if the player were to move both the Remote and the Nanchucks quickly, the building and fixing would speed up. The only complaint I have is that Indy has to use the whip more than the fists which slows down the fight a lot. All I can say is that the developers, Traveller’s Tales, did a good job again in their design for LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure.
There are a lot of goodies which need to be collected and the player could just go back to the Free Play if they feel that they are lacking. The puzzles are great to solve and the game really gives the feel of Indy’s humour, sarcasm and phobias (snakes).
The control for the vehicles also does a lot of the gameplay and as they are so easy to control, there are a lot which could be accomplished. Although the frustration with having to prod the animals like the llamas and horses can be just as frustrating in real life.
However, I really need to mention my one and only serious complaint: the camera. This really needs a lot of work. After I went through the sequel and I saw that there were the same problems, I really wondered what the whole difficulty was all about.
Well done Traveller’s Tales for giving fans of Indy a chance to role play and have fun at the same time. Although there is really a need to improve on many things, definitely this is one that is recommended.
