Lego The Lord of the Rings allows the player to play all three of the original films which include The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and finally The Return of the King. The story unfolds pretty much like it does in the film which is itself taken from Tolkien's trilogy of books of the same name, and if you are familiar with the trilogy you will understand how the story unfolds. The story itself is pretty straightforward but full of wonderful mythological characters.
The main character in the game is Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit, short and stout as all Hobbits are, and his mission is to take a magical ring in order to save mankind from the wrath of Sauron who wanted the ring in order to control the lives and minds, in fact the very soul of all creatures. In order to do this he needs to obtain the ring, which happened to fall into the hands of another who later passed it to Frodo. He later leaves his magical surroundings in order to destroy the ring.
Upon Frodos journey he will encounter various creatures called Orcs, Elves and Dwarfs, and other fouler creatures such as Shelob, a giant evil spider, many of whom were cursed by the ring and have the sole job of finding it. The ring wants to be found, it needs to be destroyed and the only place it can be destroyed is in a fire at a place called Mount Doom, which Frodo is trying to find.
Without relating much more of the story, the ring was taken from Sauron during an epic battle which is how it came to be in the possession of a little Hobbit, the gameplay in Lego Lord of the Rings is stunning, the attention to detail, the up close plastic images of these loveable characters is really striking and clear. The sound and music which relates to the film series is also present within the game and really adds to the overall authenticity of the experience. The controls seem to be better than the other Lego Games that have preceded it.
You also get the chance to do a lot of free roaming which I was pleased to see, mainly as this enables a much wider and broader game experience and there were lots of quests and so fourth to attend to, that coupled with over 60 characters who you get to engage with I found this a really enjoyable game.
If you are a fan of the trilogy then Lego Lord of the Rings will please most people, irrespective of age, they really have done a nice job on what was an excellent platform in which to design such a game.
