Saints Row IV once again puts players in charge of the leader of the Third Street Saints Gang, who has now been elected president of the United States. Unfortunately, the planet is then invaded by the Zin race and their supreme overlord Zinyak, who abducts the cabinet and places them into a virtual version of the city Steelport. Causing chaos in the virtual version of Steelport attracts attention, just as it did in the real version of the city in Saints Row: The Third. But instead of fending off gangs and police, players do battle with a variety of different aliens, robots, and spaceships. And instead of wresting control of the city away from rival factions, gamers perform missions to take control of portions of the simulation. The franchise's signature customization returns, giving players hundreds of different ways to individualize their characters, weapons, and vehicles.

The fourth installment of Saints Row series takes place five years after Saints Row: The Third. At first it seems to be a typical open-world, third-person shooter with a lot of quality customization options which is right in line with the other games of the series as well as similar games of the genre, but not everything is as it seems. This time player gets to control the leader of the Third Street Saints gang once more, only the Saints are not faced with just another gang war this time. The stakes are much higher.

The entire series has over the years become more and more over the top and all the more enjoyable for it, after all it is only make believe. Saints Row IV is the natural progression of a through the roof, ridiculous and hilarious story. A lot of characters come from the earlier games both friends and opponents, and it does not take long for the game to get into fantasy overdrive with the unlikely event of the player, controlling the gang's Boss, managing to stop a nuclear missile by riding on its back and disarming it in flight, and then subsequently it becomes totally bonkers when the player becomes President of the United States and, as Commander-in-chief, it becomes necessary for him to save the entire world from a hostile alien invasion headed by the alien warlord Zinyak, who capture the gang boss and his cabinet in the White House. Things get even more bizarre when the President Boss and his minions find that they have been placed in computer simulation by the alien invaders.

In order to combat the aliens and escape form the simulation the player needs more than just street smarts and big guns, superhuman powers are a must. In addition to new alien weapons with unlimited ammo and new vehicles to buy and steal, the player can also purchase upgradable superpowers like super jumps, force fields and telekinesis. The aliens of course are nothing like a rival gang nor your run of mill drugs or arms dealers, nor even any police or military force. The bulk of the game takes place in the familiar city of Steelport from Saints Row: The Third, but it the city is not as it was once was. It is also necessary to fight against simulations, generated by aliens, of past enemy gangs and rid themselves from their own personal simulations generated by their own fears.

There are a large number of side-quests and loyalty missions along with the main campaign as well as optional romance plots to embrace with other characters. Despite the return to Steelport the altered mission maps are full of surprises. The game, which is available now on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, features a two player co-op mode as well as online multiplayer and a lot of downloadable content. The DLC packs consist of some extra missions as well as additional character customization options and weapons to make gameplay even more fun and chaotic. Watch out for an alternative ending as a penalty for not completing certain actions or tasks.

This is a wonderfully over the top yarn which does not take itself seriously, and, lets face it, when you have seen a few games in this genre there is really a limit to what you can do to go forward with the usual everyday story of gangster folk and so why not go off at a tangent. Let's just hope the game's developers are not blessed with prophetic insight.
