Samurai Warriors 4-II on the PlayStation Vita is a hero-focused saga that casts a spotlight on the samurai that shaped the Sengoku era and tells their stories through 13 exciting new chapters. These chapters revolve around nine characters introduced in Samurai Warriors 4. Naomasa Ii appears as a playable character for the first time, and the various personalities of the age are explored in more depth in 'Story Mode', which is now focused on individual characters. Series favorite 'Survival Mode' returns as well, powered up from its previous iterations. The most well-received elements of 'Samurai Warriors 4' are carried over, while the action balance, cut-scenes and character development systems have all been significantly upgraded.
Samurai Warriors 4-II is a Japanese hack and slash game developed by Omega Force and later published by Koei Tecmo Games, this is the expansion to Samurai Warriors 4 and the sequel to Samurai Warriors 3. This game was released in downloadable format for the PC, PS Vita, and PS3 and available on the PlayStation 4 in both disk and downloadable format.
The game takes place in Japan during a period where much military conflict is taking place and political warfare is at its most heightened peak, where Japan has been divided between regions ruled by daimyo that lasted from the middle of the 16th to early 17th century.
I will briefly touch up on some of the different modes of gameplay as well as other useful new features which have been added to the expansion Samurai Warriors 4-II.
Survival mode allows you to take control of a single character as you fight to clear as many levels as possible within the castle walls, whilst also collecting weapons and mounts to be used in and during the game. Your Health Gauge is important as well so all eyes will need to be kept on that little gauge, as well as keeping an eye on the timer. As you level up by completing each level you will notice that the enemies will continue to grow stronger the further you move up the levels. There are some lucrative spoils of war that can be obtained from levelling up, so there is scope and rewards to be had from completing these combat missions. The downfall, there is only so many items you can carry on your person.
If you complete a certain number of levels whilst playing in Survival Mode then you will receive a Level Bonus that will help you the next time you attempt this mode, making it advantageous to play to through the mode multiple times. I will give you a few examples of the different level ups which can be obtained. A level 5 bonus would give your health an increase by 5%, level 40 would allow your items to be increase by 2.
Survival Mode (Challenge)
This is a brand new Survival Mode which has been added to the game and your goal is to set high scores in a variety of different challenges that you partake in, each with their own special rules which govern these challenges.
Chamber of Trials
This mode enables the player to be able to attempt to defeat as many enemies as possible within the given time limit, which is shown on screen, this mode allows you to take on an entire army all by yourself. Whilst in the Chamber of Trials the best course of action would be to use Normal Attacks, Power Attacks, and Hyper Attacks to defeat the wave of enemies.
Chamber of Riches
The object of Chamber of Riches is to obtain as much gold as possible within the given time limit. The main objective as a player is to enter the "Golden Time" bonus, this will then generate gold each time you attack the enemy clocking up your riches.
Chamber of Agility
Your objective here is to eliminate the standard bearers which are stationed at each of the checkpoints, and to reach these checkpoints will require fighting past archers and shield soldiers in a race against the clock.
Chamber of Death
This mode is not for the fair hearted and requires a certain score needed before you can enter the Chamber of Death, this score must be obtained whilst playing in the Chamber of Trials, Chamber of Riches, and Chamber of Agility. Once a certain score is obtained entry is granted. Once in the Chamber of Death your objective is to defeat as many enemies as possible in a real hard tense environment where the enemies are much stronger and perform blows which if unskilled can be deadly.
There is a plethora of downloadable content available for Samurai Warriors 4-II and require a small fee in order to obtain, some examples would be, weapons packs, scenario packs which adds additional weaponry or scenarios based on the type of pack you may purchase. If you purchased the Weapons pack then you would receive upgraded versions of the original weapons found in Samurai Warriors 4. Some of the downloadable content will only be available on certain consoles.
Samurai Warriors 4-II is an interesting title and celebrates the 10th anniversary since the first original release, the developers wanted to make this something special to celebrate this milestone. In closing I think they actually succeeded, given the fast paced stunning graphics and overall intense fighting. Even with numerous characters fighting at once, the frame rate seems to hold its own which is a rarity in traditional Japanese fighting games.
