'Shape Up' was developed by Ubisoft Montreal for the Xbox One. Next in line in the genre of exercise/fitness games, Ubisoft brought everything that the Xbox One had to offer in order to entice gamers to work up a sweat in order to work off the pounds. Knowing that fitness games are notoriously niche, we decided to take a look at the product in order to see how it appealed to the average Joe. If you might be interested in getting your fitness in check with the help of your XB1, keep on reading.

For years Ubisoft has worked their fitness franchise under the name: "Your Shape: Fitness Evolved" and they have always been, more or less, a failure. The titles have no heart and soul to them and they end up coming off as bland experiences. Exercise is already difficult to do now trying to do it with a boring video game as motivation is even worse. So that must have been the sort of thoughts that fueled Ubisoft Montreal as they began to develop 'Shape Up'. The company needed something fresh and new that would change the way their fanbase interacted with the title.

Getting in shape is not fun and don't believe any exercise video that would try to tell you otherwise. 'Shape Up', however, seems to be trying to change that fact. The developers decided to disregard the traditional exercises that make up so many of these fitness based video games in exchange for something that is a little less effective but a whole lot more entertaining. While our first impulse is to roll our eyes at the idea, we couldn't argue with the results. The developers decided to try and turn their video game work outs into a zany playtime that pushed you without letting you realize you were actually working out.

The game itself focuses on full body participation as parlayed through a variety of minigames. Rather than following a lifeless instructor go through the motions, you will instead be launched into a variety of different games that push you to push yourself. You could start off bench pressing elephants before moving on to karate chopping ice cubes. It sounds bizarre and it sounds unlikely to work, but it actually does. Changing the traditional fitness formula makes 'Shape Up' an already more interesting experience for us when compared to 'Fitness Evolved' or the 'Jillian Michaels' titles. The game modes are going to appeal to a wider audience and those of us that would feel too intimidated to work out with a video game are going to instead feel like they are just actively playing one. It's pretty smart, really.

Once you boot up the title you will be faced with a few options that will set the tone for your experience, both in the game and in real life. You can opt to take part in a variety of specific minigames or you can opt to take part in a quest. These training quests last for four week periods and they incorporate traditional RPG elements to keep players intrigued, focused, and ready to sweat. Your goal in this game mode is to progress through your challenges as you work your way up to beating the 'big boss' at the end of the four weeks. There is a little bit of funky storytelling involved to keep things going along. Unfortunately there are only two quests available at the time of launch with a few more slated to be released early on in the year. By the time of this writing you should be able to buy DLC expansions for the other quests. Adding DLC on to a $60 fitness title is a tough sell for many people, so you will have to weigh your options carefully before deciding to purchase any more.

Let's take a moment to talk about the actual exercises because that is why most people are here. Each minigame, or exercise, focuses on different prats of your body. You will see games that target your legs, abs, and arms. There is a minigame called 'Squat Me to the Moon' that will have you performing squats, one of the most efficient exercises known to man, all under the guise of some mini game. Other games will have you develop your cardio by running in place, performing karate, or even breaking on screen items. No matter what game you actually end up playing, you will have to move quickly with a focus on accuracy. 'Shape Up', much like many Kinect influenced titles, demands that its users be as accurate as possible with their movements. Wasted movement is wasted time and wasted time means failure. You can play these games alone, against the AI, or with a friend.

While the game sounds pretty engaging, there are some issues. No matter how much you enjoy the minigames, you will eventually grow tired of them. During your time spent inside of the quests you will repeat the same maneuvers over and over almost every single day. No matter how much you enjoy the game, you will likely grow weary of seeing the same moves performed over and over. There is also a lack of proper safety communication for the different exercises. There is always a reason to be careful while you work out, even if you are just doing body weight stuff.

In order for the game to run effectively you need to have a 4 x 4 space cleared in front of your television. In smaller living rooms this becomes almost impossible. In order to get the most out of the challenges you need the free space to move, run, jump, and dive. Some stages are more space intensive than others.

At the end of the day 'Shape Up' on the Xbox One won't replace the gym for anyone who has already been there. The game DOES, however, provide a viable alternative for those of us that want to get shape from the safe confines of our own living rooms.
