Sid Meier's Pirates! Franchise first set sail in the year 1987, approximately 20 years ago, with two remakes for the PC platform. Pirates! Gold was the first one in 1993, and then a 2004 remake called Sid Meier's Pirates, which was also released for Microsoft's Xbox. And now we get to enjoy it the comfort of the handheld PSP.

Sid Meier's Pirates, (Sid Meier's Pirates Live the Life on PC) is a classic gem of a title for all gamers out there. It is a hybrid between the Xbox and the PC versions, with some features that were not initially included in the Xbox now included in the PSP version.

The game starts with the player making a choice of a starting year, a level of difficulty and then choosing which nation you will be loyal to (English, Dutch, French, and Spanish are among the choices). As the levels progresses and you begin your first attack on the enemy country, as you would expect, the country attacked and its allies will be hostile to you, while your mother country will reward you with loot, land, and a greater rank for your efforts.

It is not all about battles, barter is one of the peaceful methods you can use to make a lot of money or useful items. You can also sell some of your previously acquired treasures, loot that you have picked up by fair means or foul along the way. It is worth bearing in mind that there are also the daughters of high ranking personages in various countries who are always on the lookout for a potential husband who will thus acquire higher status through marriage.

After defeating an enemy ship, you can recruit their men to become members of one of your crews. Or if you want to further add to their numbers you can recruit in places such as the local tavern where you can even press men into service. One of the most most important aspects of the Pirates series is the management of your crew and the ships at your disposal, you have to make sure the numbers ships are maintained and your crews are happy otherwise they may decide to mutiny or even kill you.

The controls in the PSP works perfectly adequately for this particular game. The more important actions such as navigation and sword fighting are easy enough to perform. However, do not to expect this version to be the same as that for the PC, as with all games there are real tendencies for the PSP and other handheld versions to be lacking a little when compared with their PC counterparts.

Of course any pirate titled game will not be complete without some treasure hunting, and there is plenty of that, and although the emphasis is on ships, this being a pirate game, there is some action on land where one of the many dangers is the threat of wild animals which are partial to a bit of human flesh to supplement their diet.

There is also a multiplayer mode is available where up to four players can play with half a dozen maps. I would recommend this PlayStation Portable version game which, although not as good as PC version is still good enough to keep the player or players entertained.
