Skylanders Giants on the 3DS finds gamers battling the evil forces of Kaos yet again, this time with the aid of more than 40 new characters, including the hugely powerful new Giant Skylanders. Each character is once again also represented by a real-life toy, outfitted with an RFID chip that allows it to appear in the game when placed on the special Portal of Power. As players battle with their uniquely skilled characters they earn experience points that can be used to upgrade weapons and skills. The in-game action once again mixes elements of melee and ranged combat, platforming, and puzzle solving, with the new Giant Skylanders towering over their smaller cousins, and the new LightCore Skylanders illuminating when placed on the portal.

For those of you familiar with today's gaming industry, Skylanders Giants is a very familiar title. With the massive success of Activision's Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, the second title in the series rolled off the press within the year.

Skylanders evoke a sense of awe and joy within any child gamer in earshot of the word, making Activision's marketing success with collectible toys a major hit. In addition to these new collectible figures, the second Giants game sports new gameplay mechanics with "giant" Skylanders -- their incredible size allows them to bust down towering doors to obtain entry into bonus areas, netting the player more coins and items along the way. Similar to a real-time Pokemon game, you play as one of three Skylanders chosen by a portal connected to the system (two if playing on the 3DS), making the choice of element and Skylander very important. A team with a wide range of ability and skill sets is more likely to succeed.

That being said, there is a lot of stock in knowing which booster pack are available for the game. The base game comes with two Skylanders and a Giants figure, or for previous Spyro's Adventure players, one Giants figure. Most of the Skylanders are sold individually, released in a set of waves, but the most efficient way to build your Skylanders collection is through the battlepacks and booster sets.

The first battlepack contains Chop Chop, Shroomboom, and the Dragonfire Cannon. Chop Chop and Shroomboom are Skylanders figures, while the cannon unlocks a PVP area of the game, as well as adds a magic item you can use for up to 45 seconds in every level played. The cannon is advantageous against bosses, and its timely use can easily result in a winning strategy.

The second battlepack features Zap, Hot Dog, and the Scorpion Striker catapult. The catapult launches exploding cannonballs around the area it is summoned at, causing damage to enemies around the impact area. This is very useful for swarms or mobs of enemies, while the diversity of a water and fire Skylander in the same pack help to fill out a balanced team.

Skylanders can also be purchased in packs of threes. This is easily the most cost-efficient way to build your collection, as the price balances to only two of the figures individually. You get an extra one for free!

However, some Skylanders figures are not available in a three-pack and must be obtained individually. The Legendary figures are also usually sold separately, with the exception of a few specific battlepacks. These Legendary characters are identical to their normal counterparts in species alone -- their skills are initially enhanced, and their colors are different (similar to shiny Pokemon) though the enhanced skills seem to even out as they level up.

All in all, Skylanders Giants is a respectable addition to the Skylanders series, enhancing graphics, gameplay, and the flexibility of the world with the addition of the Giants mechanic. You can't go wrong with any of the ways Activision has made the characters available!
