Skylanders Trap Team on the Xbox One seeks to further push the envelope on the world that once belonged almost solely to a little dragon named Spyro. In Trap Team we get to see all of our favorite Skylanders come to life, many of whom have been pulled from various games in the Spyro legacy. Developed by Toys for Bob and published on just about every video game console there is, we couldn’t wait to dig into the title. Months of watching trailers brought up our excitement level as we couldn’t help but fall in love with the colorful and fun world that we had once been so addicted to as children. Fortunately for us the developers at Toys for Bob stayed true to the childish, yet mature, style and the outcome was a game that is fun for the whole family. Let’s dig in and see what went so right with this game!

We once heard the Skylander series described as the Call of Duty franchise for children, because no matter what is actually in the game it will sell like hot cakes to youngsters. Every Christmas Activision makes a big push with another Skylanders entry and it’s easy to see why that would leave many people jaded. Devs like EA have made it basically part of their company culture to upsell annual releases with minimal improvements. So does Skylanders Trap Team fall into that same pit? We don’t think so. In fact, this is probably the strongest game in the entire series so far.

The presentation for this newest Skylanders entry is startlingly close to all of its predecessors. Kaos is at it again (that rascal) as he has freed a ton of the most vile villians in all of the Skylands from their respective cells. Now these villains are all working together, at the disposal of Kaos, in order to take over the world as we know. Fairly boilerplate stuff, right? Kaos continues to partake in shenanigans and it is up to us, as various Skylanders, to put him back where he belongs. The premises have never needed to be super intriguing due to the demographic that these games are geared toward. Keeping the story simple and accessible is a sure way to keep younger gamers entertained.

So looking over the premise it is pretty fair to ask the question: What’s new? After all, if the premise is remaining consistent then that means Toys for Bob probably doesn’t have much developed to keep the titles progressive. Hold your horses, however, as the progress is in the name of the title. That’s right, Traps. Like in Swap Team, when swapping became the new core gameplay element, this new iteration pushes the idea of traps onto gamers. Traps come in a variety of niches: magic, life, tech and so on. Using the right style trap on the right enemy will allow you to capture them after you beat them up. The traps serve as Pokeballs, sort of, in that they capture your enemies and add them for usage to your own team. Your newly trapped cohorts will sit in little portals when they aren’t in play for you and during that time they will make sure to grumble accordingly.

The strength of Skylanders Trap Team has always been in its accessibility and gorgeous presentation. The same thing holds true for Trap Team. The graphics are appropriately upgraded and the color palette choices continue to be exceedingly strong. Everything in this game is vibrant and every character pops off of the screen with personality. Our different Skylanders are rendered here in their full glory and a host of enemies to trap keep things fresh for you as you play. A hidden gem of the Skylanders series has also always been the voice acting involved, and this game is no exception. Every character is teeming with their own personality which makes the whole thing just a ton of fun.

Every foe that you manage to trap will also unveil their own quest hidden later on in the game. You can find these quests by activating your captured teammates and exploring with them. Finding their quests is a good bit of fun and going through them will flesh out your team in a meaningful way. As the game progresses your team will progress as well, becoming even tougher as you encounter meaner enemies.

Though most of what we have talked about has been glowing, there are some notable issues and they come with the territory of these 'collectible' games. Getting through certain portals in the game will require you to trap an enemy that matches their class. One of the only portals you can’t get into is the Life Portal. Life classes cannot be captured in the game and your pre-existing Life class critters won’t work. So you will have to fork over some cash in order to buy a way into the portals. If any other franchise, or company, did this then it would be damning. However, collectibles have always been en vogue for youngsters and it just comes with the territory of the genre. If you really do enjoy the game than a few extra dollars spent won’t stop you.

The actual gameplay in this title is as addicting and accessible as ever. You’ll find a mixture of platforming moments with 3D exploration, fun combat, and even a few puzzles along the way. The layout of the game is almost identical to that of the prior entries and the feel is very similar as well. This isn’t a big deal for younger gamers, but us vets might look at it a little sideways: couldn’t something new be added?

In any event Skylanders Trap Team on the Xbox One is a notable extension of the mega Skylanders franchise. The game sets out to be everything that the developers wanted it to be and we fully expect it to rack up sales until the next title is released. Despite various paywalls there is truly a ton of content available here. So check it out if you are a fan of the franchise, or merely interested in getting a game for a youngster.
