'Sniper Elite III' on the PlayStation 4 is a first-person action shooter which was developed by Rebellion Developments and published by 505 Games.

Out of nowhere the the developers at Rebellion Developments became hot names in the video game industry, thanks to their 'Sniper Elite' franchise. The series got out to an excellent start with their first installment back in 2005. Since then fans have taken the chance to leap onto the series and, due to this, the franchise has exploded in growth. 'Sniper Elite III' is the third part of the franchise and it was released back in July of 2014 for the PlayStation 4. We've always been a fan of the tactical/stealth shooter and so we couldn't wait to get our hands on a copy. After installing the game we jumped right back in, grabbed our rifle, and got to work winning the war.

If you haven't gotten the chance to play a 'Sniper Elite' game then you are in for a treat. But before you pick up the controller we will give you a little bit of what to expect. In 'Sniper Elite' you play as a, well, sniper of course. Using a third person view to walk around you switch to first person only to steady your rifle and deliver a killing blow. While the title definitely caters to the bloodthirsty war crowd, it moves at a slower pace and forces you to be more tactical in your approach. As you steady your rifle you want to make sure that you get a killing shot in your first try, snipers don't typically fare well in combat seeing as they are likely on their own. Once you do pull the trigger you will be treated to a gory slow motion shot of your bullet doing some major damage. Not for the faint of heart.

'Sniper Elite III' continues the the story of the under represented North African conflict. The game starts out in 1942 during the Battle of Gazala. You play as OSS Sniper Karl Fairburne. You are sent to kill General Vahlen and in the process find out just what he has been up to. From there you are sent all around Africa in order to engage in an increasingly dangerous fight. You get sent to kill enemy soldiers, retrieve important documents, and even rescue prisoners of war. The information that the game feeds you can be pretty complicated and fascinating if you get a chance to really pay attention to it. Otherwise it sort of becomes a background blur punctuated only by the sound of gunfire as you roam mission to mission.

As you could probably tell from the title, the crux of the game occurs with your eye planted firmly into the scope of your rifle. Outside of scurrying from spot to spot, this is where most of your action takes place. You can use other weapons if you need them but they are not your primary choices as they don't fit into the wheelhouse of an elite sniper. Being that sniping is in the title of the game, it was important for the developers to get it right. Looking at their past releases we can safely say that what we have in 'Sniper Elite III' is an evolution of the process and one that is equal parts fascinating and difficult.

'Sniper Elite III' works its difficulty sliders in a very specific way. The easier you set the difficulty the easier it is to control your rife. At the normal mode, Marksman, you will be able to slow down time in order to get the perfect shot off. You perform this function by holding down your right bumper. When you do it you will see a red triangle that alerts you as to the intended path of your bullet. This is great for beginners who want to get in the game and experience a few awesome kills but after half an hour or so it begins to feel more and more like a cheat mode, not a scaled level of difficulty. So being the sadists that we are, we quickly upped the difficulty to get rid of this function.

One of the most revered (and reviled) features from 'Sniper Elite II' was the X-Ray camera that showed the detailed damage that your bullets did to your opponent. Once you released your shot and your bullet found its mark you would be treated to a high detailed X-Ray map of the baddies body getting shredded. This feature is enhanced up for 'Sniper Elite III'. We get more details in the X-Ray mode whether you wanted them or not. You will see bone structures crumble, organs get obliterated, and flesh go flying. This feature isn't for everyone and it can be completely turned off in the menu or skipped while in battle with the press of a button. Some find it addicting to aim for certain parts of the body as if it were some kind of trick shot. We get it.

Any real life sniper will tell you that the second most important thing to them is relocating after they fire a shot. Snipers don't get treated like regular soldiers during war. They are looked down upon and hated thanks to the way that they operate. If a sniper is captured by opposing military they typically aren't just executed, they are tortured. So it is important to always be changing your position after a shot in the game. Assume that your opponent is tracking your shot and you will never have them get the drop on you. So before you ever fire your gun, make sure that you have an escape route in mind. The first shot you take will likely confuse them. The second shot will act like a homing beacon for the enemy soldiers.

'Sniper Elite III' on the PlayStation 4 never needed to be a gorgeous game for us to fall in love with it and that's good. North Africa doesn't really give the developers a whole lot to work with in terms of developing gorgeous backdrops. Still character models look nice and the presentation is top notch. We give the experience two hearty thumbs up.
