Surf's Up on the PSP (PlayStation Portable) is an arcade surfing and extreme sports video game. The action is set at the annual Reggie Belafonte Big Z Memorial Surf Off, where surfers from around the world are ready to risk it all for glory. Players experience the rush and thrills of surfing in exotic surf spots around Pen Gu Island and can rip it up and play as one of 10 characters from the film, including Cody, the young challenger from Shiverpool; Tank, the merciless champion; or Big Z, the surfing legend from the past. Win the championship in the single-player mode or challenge your friends in the multiplayer mode.

I hate to admit it, but a lot of players have said including me, that this is somewhat near or even a rip-off of Mario cart on water. But don’t take the game less serious as it is fun even in its simple form.

Being a movie and video game crossover, the characters and the theme is set to that in the movie: penguins, surf boards, and a lot of water. But it does differ a little as the main objective is to win a surf race over obstacles, weapons fired on you, and ramps, Surf’s up is a great game to play when you are looking for a breather.

In the game, you get to pick characters from the movie and compete against other surfers in a unique track loaded with traps, obstacles, powerups and of course ramps. Brace yourself as the computer AI is not going to take things easy for you. By the time the AI picks up an explosive, it will look for you which is nice for a game since, despite the simple graphics and game play you may be looking for a challenge. Not to mention that there are plenty of shortcuts that you can use to take over your opponents and get to the finish line faster. Cheating or not, this is fun.

The game is loaded with music to pump that feeling of speed and fun, but if you don’t like the songs, you can always put your own choices of mp3 and place it inside the music folder of the game. The graphics are simple yet complement the theme of the beach and surfing. The frame rate is also nice as the movements are smooth. Graphics hound players are not going to like the simple water splashes and also bouncy feel that surfers get while surfing. Furthermore, the graphics are not really meant for the PSP, it is like in the level of the PS one.

Whenever you get that hang time, you can perform tricks, but the computer picks the tricks for you. Which is not bad at all, but at times you may want to pull off that great trick that you have learned and the CPU hinders you from doing that. Lame…

The playing time usually takes about 2 hours before you can accomplish the championship, which is pretty short for the price. If you do want to have more fun with the game, then multiplayer is the key which is also the next problem.

There is not much online players coming in, not unless you can give your friends copy of the game, you will be sitting and playing alone.

However, the whole game is a wonderful break from all that serious gaming. The multiplayer is going to be a lot more fun and this would also make your purchase more relevant than just playing through the championship mode. If you are a fan of the movie, then you may want to try this one.
