A compelling action game that is hard to put down once started. The amazing Darkness game comes with great voice work and dialogue that immediately sets the mood and feel of the game. The graphics are not far behind either; it is solid, clear, and visually striking.

The Darkness is a first-person shooter platform which tells of you, the player, who has a demon within. The Darkness is the shadows where you best work and play in, it can be grisly it can be scary and gory, but that is the tale of demons and this is what makes it simply awesome.

The Darkness is based on the Top Cow comic book and the developed by the same team that created The Chronicles of Riddick. This is an interesting tale of avenging mobsters who fight a preternatural power which is hungry for the hearts of humans.

The opening is action packed from the start and you are playing the character Jackie Estacado. He is a hit man for the mob in New York City and on your 21st birthday, you wake up at the back seat of a speeding convertible. Your last assignment went totally wrong and now you and your two good fellas are trying to get around from being caught by not so ethical policemen. You get thrown a shotgun to help defend yourself in the course of the high speed chase when the car crashes. You get out, and the story simply unfolds. Your own uncle, Paulie, suspects you of betraying the family and has sent his minions to get you. It is now up to you to fend for yourself and get your name cleared, eliminating several along the way. But that is not where it stops, Paulie has sent out an order for your girlfriend, Jenny, the only one you truly care about. It’s a good thing you got help.

The Darkness possesses Jackie and lives in his body where they can link and even have conversations. This is Jackie’s help in the game. The creature within gives you demonic powers which is helpful for your defences and you can effectively get rid of all those going your way. Classic shooting and killing complete with guts and gore, this is the game, but it is more than that. The story is enough to drive you to role play and enjoy.

The Darkness has a PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 version. However, the Xbox version is clearer and sharper graphically which makes it more captivating for players. The appeal of the game is that it is surreal and the plot can be quite intriguing. The game play alone is exciting and does not fail to satisfy even if some may not find it that challenging. Otherwise, the whole set up and design is astounding and graphically surprising. For those who like the idea of playing a human heart eating protagonist, can you really pass this up? This is a game that many would find likeable and graphically violent, which simply means, awesome!
